The Old Yard has been part of Bondgate since 1995. What started as a little taste of the Mediterranean in the middle of Darlington has grown into a bar, café and taverna rolled into one.
Spanish tapas and Greek meze share the menu, the bar is stocked with real ales, good wine and cocktails, and there’s nearly always something going on.
The Mediterranean way
Forget starters and mains. Order a few plates, put them in the middle of the table, grab some bread and dig in: that’s how tapas and meze are meant to be eaten.
Chorizo in brandy, gambas pil pil and patatas with alioli sit alongside Greek classics like hummus and pitta, halloumi and gyros.
Perfect for a long lunch, a catch-up with friends or a proper night out.
When the sun’s out, so are the tables. Our pavement café is the spot for a coffee, a cold drink or a few plates while Bondgate goes by.
Local bands, acoustic sets and the big matches on screen: there’s entertainment most weekends, so check what’s on and get it in the diary.
The Bouzouki Bar and the Upstairs Taverna are yours to book for birthdays, family get-togethers and big nights with friends.
Real ales, wine and cocktails
Drop in for a coffee and a light bite at lunchtime, stay for a glass of wine in the afternoon, or settle in for the evening with a cocktail and a table full of plates.
The bar pours real ales alongside Spanish, Greek and international wines, plus cocktails made to order.
Families, dogs and walk-ins are always welcome, though on a busy night it’s worth booking ahead.
Gem
This was recommended by a colleague as we work away alot. Well omg! Honestly think it’s the best meal I’ve ever had. I ordered 2 sides and 2 tapas. Far too much food but they bagged it up and I plan on having the rest tomorrow! I had the jalapeño potato skins, a pulled beef with cheese, potatoes with a cheese sauce and the black pudding and chorizo. Honestly cannot fault at all. Only downside is I live 3 hours away but honestly think it’s worth the drive!
Diff-Ability CIC
Lots of different dishes to select from. Tapas was a great way to try new foods and start conversations. Lots of drinks to choose from including mocktails. Toilets situated upstairs and are very small for anyone with mobility issues. Lovely friendly atmosphere, decor & music. Nice staff, fast service. The family thoroughly enjoyed our visit.

Just can’t fault the place. Absolutely spot on food is always delicious on time, pipping hot. Just love it weather its a cheeky after work glass of wine , tapas for 2, or a big family meal you have never let us down.

Food was absolutely unbelievable, particularly the pulled beef with cheese, and the croquettes! But I’d get everything again and hopefully more! Generous portions, I’m taking a lot home with me for later! Super efficient and friendly service. I don’t live locally but absolutely would make a trip back just for this food! 😍
